How to fix Banana Tails | Soft Dad™

How to Fix a Banana Tail on Your Soft Dad™

Sometimes the brush tail of a Soft Dad™ or other baits with a fiber tail can get bent or twisted out of shape. We call this a “banana tail” because the tail develops a noticeable curve instead of hanging straight. This may affect the action of the bait.

It isn’t very common because the silicone tails are pretty resilient, but if it does happen, the fix is quick and simple.

What You’ll Need

  • Your Soft Dad™
  • A mug large enough to fit the tail
  • Boiling hot water
  • A kettle or other way to heat the water
  • Something to hang the bait from while it cools

Caution: You’ll be working with boiling water. Use care to avoid burns, and keep children away from the hot water.

Step 1 — Boil the Water

Heat enough water to fill your mug. Once the water is boiling, carefully pour it into the mug.

Step 2 — Heat the Tail

Hold the Soft Dad™ by the body and place only the tail section into the hot water.

Gently swirl the tail in the water for approximately one minute. The heat will soften the tail enough for it to return to its proper shape.

Step 3 — Straighten the Tail

Remove the tail from the water.

If it was curved to one side, gently push the tail toward the opposite direction of the bend, using the side of the mug to help straighten it.

Then use your hands to make any final adjustments.

Work quickly: You only have a few seconds while the silicone is warm and flexible.

Step 4 — Hang and Cool

Once the tail looks straight, hang the bait so the tail can rest naturally without touching anything.

Allow it to cool for approximately 30 minutes.

Step 5 — Check Your Tail

That’s it. Your Soft Dad™ should now have a straight, properly aligned tail again.

If it didn’t come out exactly how you wanted the first time, repeat the process until you’re happy with the alignment.

Ready to Fish

A banana tail doesn’t mean your bait is ruined. With a little hot water and a few minutes of work, you can get it back into shape and ready for the water.
